During his career, David has been the lead designer and architect-of-record for many notable projects in the Lake Tahoe Area. These projects range from the first LEED certified building in Truckee to homes for CEOs of major national and international corporations. We strive to create places that allow our clients to develop intimate connections with the landscape, places that capture the sun on a cold winter day and provide shade on a hot summer afternoon, places that energize you to get up in the morning and tackle the peak that comes into view at first light, as well as places to relax and have a drink while the sun slips over the horizon. We create form that passively regulates indoor temperatures, provides fresh air, and transmits natural light. Upon this we layer the latest technologies to create comfortable and efficient environments that blur the line between indoor and outdoor.
We believe that architecture should be responsive to both the physical and cultural context that surrounds it. For eons, vernacular architecture has been shaped by the forces of nature, materials at hand, and the skill and knowledge of local craftsman. At David Bourke Architecture + Design, we heed the lessons of vernacular design in the context of a changing culture. Responding to climate, utilizing natural materials, and understanding local building traditions, we work to create projects that are rooted in place. Further, we develop form and function that enhances today’s active/outdoor lifestyle. We look towards new solutions that are meaningful and authentic—solutions that are timeless in their beauty and functionality. Understanding client goals
The first step in the design process is developing a clear understanding of the clients’ goals for the project. This involves asking questions, reviewing images, taking tours, making lists, and above all, listening. Analyzing the site
Many of our projects are set in extraordinary natural landscapes. Getting to know that place, its unique features, and the natural and cultural forces that have shaped it is the next step in our process. We observe, research, and document our findings in a manner that establishes a firm understanding of the resources, limitations, and opportunities the site has to offer.
Documentation
Our mastery of traditional hand drawing and painting, as well as the latest computer software, allows us to effectively communicate design concepts early in the process, and lead the team in creating clear and complete construction documents. We pride ourselves in contractors’ ability to utilize our documents to develop accurate cost estimates and efficiently build our projects.
Construction
Our projects don’t end with the construction documents. They are built. During this phase of the project, we maintain an open line of communication with the builder and client. We are responsive to any questions or ideas that the builder may have and make observations of the work for the benefit of the client.
