Martis Camp Lot #139

Situated on a 1.38 acre parcel in Martis Camp that backs up to Forest Service Land, the clients approached us wanting to maximize views of the trees and minimize views of the neighbors. Laid out in a C-shape, three intersecting wings each with exterior terraces surround a large central fire pit connected to the house by a series of stone paths; sight lines are fixed on the surrounding deer-inhabited woodland and Northstar California’s Lookout Mountain beyond.

The central wing encompasses the lofty great room, the focal point of which is a full height, walk-around ledgestone fireplace featuring a flowing bronze sculpture. Timber columns support exposed steel beams, above which reclaimed vertical barn wood extends to the custom trusses supporting the ceiling. Clerestory windows provide light and ventilation high up while large windows and lift-and-slide glass doors allow a connection with the outdoors and easy access to the central patio.
